Care And Maintenance Tips For Water Softeners

The average lifespan of a water softener is 10-15 years. However, with proper care and maintenance, there are ways to extend the life of a water softener far beyond that normal lifespan.

One of the most important and basic things to do is to check the salt level every 4-6 weeks. If the salt level of your water softener drops, then hard water will begin to return to your home water supply.

When checking the salt level, also be sure to check the condition of your brine tank, as salt bridges may have formed over time. These salt bridges prevent the resin beads from properly softening the water and must be cleared to ensure proper function of the water softener.

Using the right salt for your type of water softener is key to maintaining its functionality. Cube salt or crystal salt is recommended for most available models, but be sure to read your owner's manual to ensure proper use.
