Visual Examination
The first step in determining if your UV steriliser is functioning properly is to visuallyinspect it. Check the device for any physical damage or signs of wear and tear.Inspect the housing, buttons and connectors for cracks, loose parts or otherabnormalities. Also, ensure the UV bulb is correctly positioned and firmlyconnected. Your UV sterilizer's performance will be affected by any physical damageor misalignment.
Timer Function
Many UV sterilisers have a timer that allows you to set the length of the sterilisationprocess. It is important to understand and verify the timer functionality to ensurethat the device operates for the expected duration. Read the user manual ormanufacturer instructions to learn the timer settings and how to change them. When the timer is working, test it to make sure it turns on and off at the right timesby setting different durations.
Monitoring UV Intensity
The efficiency of a UV steriliser is largely dependent on the intensity of the UV-Clight it emits. The intensity of UV can be measured which can provide a quantitativemeasure of the device performance. You'll need a special UV light metre, akaradiometer, to measure the UV intensity. These devices are meant to measure UVintensity and provide accurate readings.
Use your UV photometer to measure the UV intensity of your steriliser as per theinstructions that came with it. Usually the metre is placed near the UV bulb and thesteriliser is switched on. The metre will then give you the UV intensity in units suchas milliwatts per square centimetre (mW/cm2). Make sure that the intensity youmeasure is within the recommended levels of your UV steriliser manufacturer.
Log Maintenance
Keeping a log of your steriliser usage is one way to track how it is doing and if thereare any problems. Maintain a log detailing important information such as the dateand time of each sterilisation, the duration of the operation, and any observationsor issues that arise. This log will be a future reference for inspections and will helpyou identify trends or patterns related to the performance of your UV steriliser.
