How To Clean A Activated Carbon Filter?

Simple Rinse
For basic filter maintenance, you can simply rinse the activated carbon media under running water to wash away loose sediment and particles. Gently shake the carbon particles while rinsing.

Soak in Solution
For a more thorough cleaning, make a solution of warm water, lemon juice, and salt. Soak the activated carbon for one hour, shaking occasionally. The acidity helps dissolve mineral scale, while the abrasive action of the salt scrubs the carbon surface. Rinse thoroughly.

Hydrogen Peroxide or Vinegar
To help disinfect and deodorize, some people use diluted hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar instead of lemon juice. Soak the carbon for one hour before rinsing. Avoid using bleach solutions, as they can degrade the carbon.

Avoid Scrubbing
Never scrub the carbon media vigorously, as this can damage the porous surface needed for filtration. Gently swirling while soaking is sufficient.

Handle the carbon with care.

With regular maintenance cleanings, your activated carbon filter will provide consistent water filtration and protect the membranes of your reverse osmosis system. Be sure to replace any housings, gaskets, etc. during maintenance. A clean filter means clean, healthy water.
