Over time, minerals and even bacteria can build up in the resin bed of a water softener, reducing its efficiency and ability to provide soft water. Regularly cleaning the resin is essential to keep your water softener running efficiently for years to come, and the way to do this is with a water softener resin cleaner.
Steps:
1. Wait until the salt level in the brine tank is low
2. Determine how much resin is inside the water softener - this information can usually be found in the manual
3. Once you have determined the amount of resin in the water softener, you can calculate how much resin cleaner you need to use. For every 1 litre of resin in the water softener, you will need to use 10 ml of resin cleaner solution
4. Pour the resin cleaner directly into the brine well (or into the brine tank if your model does not have access to a brine well)
5. Perform a manual regeneration, refer to the product manual for details on how to do this
6. Give the resin bed a final rinse by running water from the soft water tap for 10 minutes
For heavily fouled water softeners, you can repeat the process a second time. You can then use a water hardness test to check that the water softener is running effectively for peace of mind. If it's working properly, you should see a reading of less than 100ppm (parts per million).
All household appliances require regular maintenance, and water softeners are no exception. Using a resin cleaner every 6-12 months will keep your system in top condition.
