How To Cycle Water Softener?

Water softener regeneration is a critical process to ensure that your water softener remains efficient and effective at all times. Over time, the resin beads in the water softener that aid in ion exchange become saturated with hardness minerals. In order to restore them to their original state and continue to provide soft water, the regeneration process needs to be initiated. These steps typically include:

 

Step 1 – Backwash Phase: This step involves reversing the water flow to flush out any dirt in the tank. Cleaning the resin bed before regeneration is essential.

Step 2 – Brine Pump Cycle: Brine solution from the brine tank is pumped into the resin tank. This step promotes the exchange of hardness minerals with sodium ions.

Step 3 – Slow Rinse: The resin bed is then rinsed with brine. The brine rinse helps keep the resin beads fully saturated with sodium.

Step 4 – Fast Rinse Cycle: Water flows quickly through the resin tank, ensuring that all excess brine is rinsed out. This helps prevent any salty taste in the water after regeneration.

Step 5 – Brine Tank Refill: Once the brine solution is used up, the tank is refilled in preparation for the next regeneration cycle. The amount of brine depends on the capacity of the water softener.
Step 6 – Flush: The remaining brine and hardness mineral residue is flushed out of the system. This ensures the resin bed is clean and ready for softening.
Step 7 – Re-Put: The water flow is reset to service, repositioning the resin bed. This prepares the softener for regular water softening.
Step 8 – Return to Service: The system now returns to softened feed water. The system operates normally, providing soft water until the next regeneration cycle.
