Is It Ok To Drink Softened Water

In most cases, softened water is considered safe to drink.
People sometimes wonder if softened water is safe to drink, because the softening process uses salt blocks or bags. But softening salt is only used to soften the resin that acts on the water-no salt gets into the water supply itself.

Sodium levels increase in softened water. Sodium is not the same as salt (sodium chloride). The Drinking Water Inspection (DWI) says water with up to 200ppm of sodium is safe to drink. Unless your water is very hard to begin with, it's unlikely that softened water will exceed that level.

If your water is very hard and you're concerned about high sodium levels, the best way to make your soft water drinkable is to use a reverse osmosis filter. Reverse osmosis is a water purification technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove salt and other large particles from drinking water. As a result, it gives you sodium-free, chemical-free, great-tasting, and healthy water.
