1. Equipment problems. First, running out of salt (an important factor in softening water) not only harms water quality, but also puts stress on the water softener itself. Water softeners regenerate, that is, they clean themselves from time to time. Putting this off until the so-called "last minute" can make it difficult for the unit to work properly.
This is because of a process called "channeling." If you go too long without salt, the water softener media will accumulate a thick layer of hardness-causing minerals. At this point, refilling the salt water tank and performing normal regeneration is not enough to restore the water softener media to normal working condition.
2. Plumbing problems. Hard water can cause all kinds of plumbing problems and even affect your water heater. But that's not all! It can also cause dishwasher failures, or at least you may notice that the dishes don't seem to be as clean as they used to be. Other household water aesthetics can also be affected, such as whether hand soap actually produces foam so that you can wash your hands properly after going to the toilet.
3. It's not good for your skin and your senses. The high mineral content in hard water tends to strip the skin of its natural oils, and is particularly harmful to the delicate skin on the face and hands. Since hands are washed more often than any other part of the body, hard water can quickly lead to painful dryness and cracking.
