Anthracite is the hardest of all coals. It has a blue flame very hot. Anthracite, a shiny black rock mined mostly in northeastern Pennsylvania, is used to heat homes and commercial buildings.
Anthracite is considered the cleanest coal to burn. It is used very commonly in hand-burning stoves, and gives off more heat and less smoke then other coals. Anthracite still is burned in some systems for home heating stoves . It burns longer than wood . "Hard coal" is called anthracite and is used especially by locomotive engineers to fire trains.
Anthracite is a "non-coking", free burning fuel. It does not "coke" or expand and fuse together when heated. It is most often fired in bottom-feed stoker boilers or single-furnace side-discharge stoker boilers with fixed grates. Anthracite has a high ash melting point so dry bottom furnaces are employed. Reducing boiler loads usually results in less heat, which means less nitrogen oxide emissions.
Proper furnace configuration and proper boiler loading, underfire air practices and fly ash reinjection can reduce particulate matter or fine smoke from burning anthracite coal. Fabric filters, electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) and scrubbers can be used to reduce particulate emissions from anthracite burning boilers. When crushed before burning , anthracite produces more particulates .
Gangue is the inferior coal that is thrown out from anthracite mines . Gangue has a lower calorific value than mined anthracite (less than half) and has higher ash and moisture content. The most usual application for gangue is fluidised bed combustion (FBC) boilers.
