Resin anion and cation exchangers for ultrapure water production

The resin consists of small plastic beads containing various functional groups attached to an inert polymer backbone. For cation exchange, the resin contains sulfonic acid groups that exchange hydrogen ions for metal cations such as calcium, magnesium, and heavy metals in the water. For anion exchange, the resin contains quaternary ammonium groups that can exchange hydroxide ions for chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and other anions.

By sequentially flowing the feed water through separate columns filled with cation and anion exchange resins, virtually all dissolved ions are removed, producing water with a purity of less than 1 microSiemens conductivity. The treated water is suitable for high-purity applications in industries such as power generation, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor manufacturing that require extremely low ion levels.

Our ion exchange systems offer several key advantages to the mining industry. Mining operations produce large amounts of wastewater containing high concentrations of dissolved metals and various anions. Recycling and reusing this water can significantly reduce water consumption and treatment costs. Cation exchange resins effectively capture metallic contaminants such as iron, copper, zinc and aluminum, even at concentrations of thousands of ppm. Anion exchange further purifies the water to reusable low ppb levels.
