For anion exchange the resin hasquaternary ammonium groups which can exchange hydroxide ions forchloride, sulphate, nitrate and other anions.

The feed water is passed through separate columns of cation and anionexchange resins which remove essentially all dissolved ions yielding water ofless than 1 microSiemens conductivity.
