Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal or activated coal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. Due to its unique porous structure, activated carbon has been extensively applied in water treatment processes to remove impurities through adsorption.

In water treatment facilities, granular activated carbon is commonly used in PAC (powdered activated carbon) systems or GAC (granular activated carbon) filters. As water flows through fixed beds of activated carbon particles in GAC filters, a wide variety of dissolved or particulate organic contaminants such as disinfection by-product precursors, taste and odor compounds, synthetic organic chemicals and certain inorganic compounds can be adsorbed onto the carbon surface or trapped in its pores due to physico-chemical interactions such as Van der Waals forces. Some toxic compounds including carcinogenic trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids can thus be removed effectively.

Besides conventional GAC treatment, PAC systems can also be used intermittently or continuously for enhanced water purification when challenges such as increased organic load or disinfection by-product precursors are present. The high adsorption capacity and kinetics of PAC allow targeted pollutants to be adsorbed quickly. Its application provides flexibility and efficiency in water treatment.

Notably, the adsorption performance of activated carbon relies greatly on various factors including specific surface properties, pore structure, and water quality conditions. Proper regeneration and reactivation can further extend the lifespan of activated carbon filters and make their application in water treatment industry more economically viable and environmentally-friendly.
