Commercial Quartz Sand for Water Treatment

Natural Sand

Abundant in nature but variable composition with impurities requires cleaning. Grain shape not as uniform as processed sand. Lower mechanical strength than physically/chemically processed types.

Fused Sand

Produced by heating natural quartz at high temperatures, fusing grains into stronger, more uniform shapes. Lower impurities and less abrasive than natural sand due to spheroidized surface. Higher strength enables use in severe applications. Cost is moderately higher.

Crested/Crested and Rounded Sand

Flame created surface features improve mechanical interlocking between grains, allowing more efficient packing without loss of flow characteristics. Stronger structures tolerant of broader pH and temperature ranges. Finest filtration performance but also more expensive than natural.

Acid Washed Sand

Chemical treatments etch away impurities on natural quartz, creating purer, harder filter media. Enhanced cleaning ability removes biofilms/organic matter. Compatible with aggressive filtration conditions and offers competitive costs.

Fine Filter Sand (20-50 mesh)

Very small, closely sized grains provide finest filtration rating for sterile applications such as food processing and manufacturing requiring micron-rated removal. Require careful rinsing to avoid drainline abrasion. High pressure drop raises operating costs.

Coarse Filter Sand (10-20 mesh)

Larger grains passing 10-20 sieves efficiently filter heavier solids in applications like stormwater, sewage and potable water treatment where pre-filtration occurs. Longer service intervals and lower pressures offset modestly reduced removal ratings.

Demand is strong for physically/chemically processed sands across industries prioritizing strength, purity and performance longevity at optimized costs. They allow expanded quartz sand applications in biotech, power generation and other value-added process streams.
