To select quartz sand for water filtration, a number of key propertiesneed to be considered to achieve the best treatment results.

Particle Size Sand grains should be 0.35-1mm in diameter for properrates of filtration. The size distributions should be narrow.

Shape - Angular and sub-angular grains have a larger surface area thanround grains and thus have a larger holding capacity. Irregular shapeslook good together.

Silica Content - For chemical inertness a minimum of 95% silica (SiO2)content is required. Contaminants can leach from impurities.

Hardness - Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, and is thus quiteresistant to scratching by abrasives. Softer materials will wear down.

Roundness - Angular to sub-angular grains are more resistant and lastlonger in fluidisation during backwash cycles.

Filtration Rate - The flow is also affected by clean bed head loss as wellas specific gravity.

Composition - Improper processing is indicated by clay, silt, dust ororganics. A sample of light colour. Neat.

Search for mining/quarry accreditations so that you know you arebuying from a verified supplier and product quality remains consistent.

Testing - Laboratory testing shall confirm the advertised properties tothe relevant AWWA, CE or other standards.
