Hardness - Quartz has a Mohs hardness of 7, making it very durable for abrasive conditions. Softer materials will degrade.

Roundness - Angular to sub-angular grains are stronger and last longer in fluidization during backwashing cycles.

Filtration Rate - Clean bed head loss must be considered along with specific gravity for affecting flow.

Composition - Clay, silt, dust or organics indicate improper processing. A clean sample is light colored.

Testing - Laboratory analysis should authenticate advertised properties to pertinent AWWA, CE or other standards.
