What is the difference between quartz sand and activated carbon used as filtering materials in quartz sand filters?

Quartz sand filters are widely used in industries such as agricultural irrigation, chemical, petroleum, metallurgy, and mining. Using quartz sand or activated carbon as the filtering medium, under a certain pressure, water with high turbidity is filtered through a certain thickness of granular or non granular quartz sand, effectively removing suspended solids, organic matter, colloidal particles, microorganisms, chlorine, odor, and some heavy metal ions in the water. This can reduce water turbidity and purify water quality.

The difference between activated carbon and quartz sand filters:

(1) Activated carbon has strong adsorption capacity and can effectively remove organic matter, odors, pigments, etc. from water.

(2) Quartz sand filters water quality, blocking large particles and suspended solids in the water, mainly targeting those small suspended solids. Quartz sand is sometimes used to remove manganese and iron from water. The service life of quartz sand filter material is much longer than that of activated carbon.

Can quartz sand and activated carbon be mixed for use?

It can be used together. Quartz sand is mainly used for filtration, and activated carbon is mainly used for adsorption. Activated carbon is used in some water sources with high water quality requirements. When used together, it is necessary to lay quartz sand on the bottom layer and then fill the quartz sand with activated carbon. However, the combination of quartz sand and activated carbon has a higher cost.
