The disinfectant properties of ultraviolet light were first discovered in the late 1880s by American engineer William H. Perkins. However, it was not until the early 1900s that UV disinfection began being applied to treat drinking water on a small scale.
In the 1930s, UV technology advanced with the development of low-pressure mercury vapor lamps that could generate high-intensity monochromatic UV-C light ideal for disinfection. Municipal water utilities started adopting UV as a primary or secondary disinfection method during this time.
Mass production of domestic UV sterilizers began in the 1980s to address boiling water for safety in some regions. Advances in lamp materials and ballasts enabled more compact, energy efficient designs suitable for point-of-entry or point-of-use application.
Understanding of UV dosage requirements improved in the 1990s when measuring devices became available to validate microbial inactivation levels. Stricter EPA guidelines defining "CT" values boosted the role of UV in meeting regulatory drinking water standards.
Modular, scalable sterilizer designs in the 2000s facilitated customized multi-barrier water treatment for various flow rates. Controller integration allowed remote monitoring and calibration of UV output.
Today's sterilizers achieve over 99.999% inactivation of pathogens including cryptosporidium and giardia cysts with low maintenance quartz sleeves and automatic wipers. Mobile and portable models ease deployment anywhere needed.
Ongoing R&D aims to extend lamp lives, reduce energy use, and combine UV with complementary processes. With water safety a growing global priority, UV technology will likely continue evolving to serve more communities worldwide reliably with its simple, chemical-free sterilization approach.
