Replacement Schedule
Most whole-home carbon filters require new cartridge replacement every 6-12 months depending on water quality and usage. More frequent changes may be needed for untreated well water. Monitoring flow/pressure helps determine cartridge life.

Cleaning
Light periodically washing with water restores some adsorption sites on cartridges. Heavy rinsing avoids contamination. Forcibly backwashing risks damaging internal carbon structure. Replace rather than heavily clean spent cartridges.
 

Inspection
Check monthly for flow/pressure drop indicating nearing capacity. Excessive drop signals need for early replacement. Visually inspect annually for cracks, mineral/biofilm buildup which compromises function over time.

Pre-Filtration
Sediment pre-filters protect expensive carbon and extend life by capturing debris. Replace pre-filters on a scheduled basis based on visible dirt accumulation. Cleaning is insufficient for full-depth sediment filters.

Sanitization
Boiling or rinsing new cartridges with chlorine-treated water kills bacteria potentially present from manufacturing/storage. Periodic sanitization also controls bacterial growth on existing cartridges after power outages.
