Filter housings are made from durable plastics like polypropylene that are corrosionresistant yet light weight. In the versions reinforced with fibreglass, structuralintegrity is added. Stainless steel housings can withstand harsh environments butare more expensive.

Quartz content is also a key. High-purity silica sands are least affected by changes inpH and dissolved solids. Irregular shapes have less surface area contact thanspherical grains. Flow rates are improved by narrow size distributions of 0.4-0.8mm.

Efficiency is also affected by underdrain systems. Plastic laterals and headers tieinto collector tubes that efficiently distribute flow beneath the sand bed. Gravel-freedesigns allow for servicing and prevent fines migration that decreases permeabilityover time.

Well-molded parts guarantee dependable interactivity. Syndiotactic polystyrenebeads are more crush resistant than conventional ion exchange resins duringbackwashing.
