1. Broken Rotor Valve
The rotor valve is used to fill the water softener with water for filtration. Over time, the rotor valve wears out. A broken rotor valve is the most common reason for a leaking water softener. Sometimes, the problem is not the rotor valve, but the seal of the valve.
2. Damaged Brine Tank
If your water softener is leaking from the bottom, it may be that the brine tank is damaged. The brine tank contains water softening salt, which is used to replace calcium and magnesium ions with sodium. This brine tank is very fragile and can be easily damaged.
3. Loose Hose Connections
The solution to a leaking water softener may be as simple as tightening the hose connection. However, if your hoses are worn out from years of use, you may need to have them replaced by a professional.
4. Leaking Bypass Valve O-Rings
Bypass valve O-rings should be lubricated regularly. If your bypass valve O-rings are not lubricated regularly or have been used for many years, you may need to replace them to prevent leaks in your home's water softener. It is possible to replace the o-ring yourself, but we recommend working with a professional to prevent water damage and other problems on your property.
5. Overflow Problems
If the water in your brine tank is overflowing, you may have an overflow problem. Overflows occur when the float valve in the water softener is misaligned or malfunctions. Simply reinstalling the float valve to the correct position will fix the leak.
6. Cracked Resin Tank
The last common reason for a leak in a water softener system is a cracked resin tank. A cracked resin tank is most likely the result of an aging system. Water softeners have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, so if your system is older and is leaking, a cracked resin tank may be the culprit.
