Multi media mechanical filter products are widely used in agricultural irrigation, chemical engineering, petroleum, metallurgy, mining, electronic power, petrochemical, metallurgical electroplating, papermaking and textile, pharmaceutical dialysis, food and beverage, domestic drinking water, factory and enterprise water, swimming pools, etc. It can meet the liquid filtration needs of various industries.
One of the most widely used multimedia filter media blends pairs silica sand, anthracite coal, and granular activated carbon (GAC).
Sand (0.3-1mm) provides mechanical filtration of solids and seats the upper layers.
Anthracite (0.8-1.2mm) above the sand adsorbs organics and particular contaminants through its internal porous structure.
GAC (0.8-1mm) placed above anthracite capitalizes on its high surface area to chemically adsorb a broad spectrum of compounds like VOCs, pesticides, herbicides and disinfection byproducts that activated carbon is renowned for removing.
Another proven configuration substitutes manganese greensand for GAC when targeting metals like iron and manganese. Greensand's oxide coatings chemically oxidize dissolved metals, allowing their physical capture in subsequent layers.


Some factories producing ultra-pure water utilize finer filter sand or garnet below anthracite to broaden pore size distributions for retaining sub-micron particles. Zeolites between anthracite layers take advantage of their ion-exchange abilities.
Historically, anthracite or other coals alone sufficed for many applications. Today, leveraging different media paired strategically maximizes multimedia filtration treatment. Proper layer thicknesses properly distribute flow to capitalize on each material.
With optimized media selection and configuration, multimedia filters supply comprehensive physical, chemical and biological processes in single treatment vessels. This engineering efficiency has cemented their reputation for reliability.
